Inside is a cramped room with a barred window, a bed, a washbasin, a toilet, a table and a chair. He knows the room well. When he was twenty he occupied a cell just like it. There was one difference: in his day, there was no toilet. He had a bucket instead. Brack, now 78, tells the group gathered around him what it was like to be imprisoned here: the intimidation, the isolation, the crushing loneliness. “You were completely on your own. You never saw another prisoner. You weren’t allowed to talk to the guards – all they did was shout. The only person who spoke to you was the interrogator,” he says. “That loneliness, being reduced entirely to yourself, was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had.” Fourteen years ago, Brack came back to Hohenschönhausen for the first time. Returning to the place where he had once been imprisoned brought his memories rushing back. “I had such a powerful flashback that my knees went weak. I thought I was going to stop breathing.” Today, Brack has a key. For the past twelve years, he has worked as a guide at the memorial site, leading visitors through the former prison grounds and its corridors. He describes the work as a kind of therapy. “Now I walk across the yard with the key in my hand,” he says. “It’s not those men in uniform who have the key anymore.” There is something quietly symbolic about the gesture. The man who was once powerless now opens the doors. Brack has no hesitation in describing the former East Germany as a dictatorship. When he leads school groups through Hohenschönhausen, he wants them to understand what that meant in human terms – and what it means to live in a democracy. “If the students leave here after a tour looking thoughtful, then I feel we’ve achieved something,” he says. Brack himself was once a civil rights activist in East Germany. For his long-standing commitment to democracy and civic engagement, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The honour left him with mixed feelings. “I’m torn between embarrassment and satisfaction,” he says. Satisfaction, he explains, because for someone who was once “a pariah” in East Germany, being recognised in this way by the society he lives in today is deeply gratifying. “And embarrassment,” he adds, “because when you receive such a great honour, I suppose you can be a little embarrassed, can’t you?” He smiles. Angelika Jakob https://angelikajakob.com/Kompassmacher The Compass Maker Always follow the Needle From the armchair you are sitting in right now, would you know where north is? The pocket compasses made by Norbert Fritz in Schwabach could point you in the right direction. And they might even tell you something about the course of the world. At the moment, Norbert Fritz cannot do with people wanting something from him – or even those who merely breathe. He is fitting tiny magnetic needles onto almost invisible bearing points. It takes very steady hands and good eyesight. The 53-year-old works in a 40-square-metre room on an industrial estate in Schwabach, accompanied only by a radio, shelves of gleaming, oil-coated specialist tools and five sage-green machines dating from the 1930s, used to assemble his compasses. “For the counter-bearing, I fit rubies. Their hardness allows the needles to turn northwards smoothly and reliably,” he explains. He is particularly pleased with this feature. “That is what sets my compasses apart from cheap models that you don’t get much pleasure from.” Wearing a red checked shirt, he strokes his small white goatee. Then he gets up, loosens his stiff finger joints with a series of satisfying cracks and points towards the old machines. “I need a different machine for every operation on the partly assembled case: punching holes, riveting, fitting the glass,” he explains. “And I perform each operation hundreds of times in succession. You have to stay completely alert. Not everyone can do that.” A needle that changed the world Norbert Fritz makes sturdy, no-nonsense pocket compasses, 45 millimetres in diameter, housed in gleaming brass cases. Today, it has reinvented itself as one of the city’s most intriguing neighbourhoods—a magnet for artists, start-ups and students. Ten years after everyone else seemed to discover it, I finally decide to see what all the fuss is about. Better late than never. So I hop on the U-Bahn and head north-west, curious to find out whether English has really become Wedding’s second language, just as politicians like Jens Spahn claim when lamenting Berlin’s ever-growing hipster scene. It doesn’t take long to find out. Tucked away in a side street beside Wedding station, I order a hand-brewed speciality coffee—in English—at the two-storey Coffee Circle café. It could just as easily be in fashionable Prenzlauer Berg or the polished streets of central Mitte. Suddenly, my twenty-minute journey from Zoologischer Garten feels almost unnecessary. Upstairs on the mezzanine, every table is occupied by people quietly working on laptops, while the floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the surprisingly peaceful Lindower Straße. Feeling inspired, I decide to do some homework of my own and get a better sense of the district. The original Wedding—before it became part of the larger Mitte borough—is almost as densely populated as Kreuzberg or Neukölln, yet in many places greener and noticeably more relaxed. Official statistics reveal another story: only around a third of residents are in regular employment subject to social security contributions. The neighbourhood also has one of Berlin’s youngest and most diverse populations, with a remarkably high proportion of residents from migrant backgrounds, most of them under thirty. But statistics only tell part of the story. What do the people who have lived here for decades think? The answer comes just 150 metres away—although culturally it feels like another world entirely. At the traditional pub Zum Magendoktor, caretaker "Mütze" is enjoying his after-work beer. "It's too much. All these foreigners,"he grumbles, taking another swig from the bottle. Sitting at the dimly lit bar, he looks as though he has stepped straight out of one of Heinrich Zille’s sepia sketches that decorate the walls. A fruit machine flashes quietly in the corner, a pool table waits for its next game, and Schultheiß beer has been flowing from the taps here since 1906. Like any proper neighbourhood pub, it serves as a second living room—and it almost never closes. "You need a thick skin around here," says barman Paul with a grin, summing up the place's rough-edged but unmistakably authentic atmosphere. There are 750 flats, 750 stories. Rents range from €8 to €11 per square metre. A lot of the world in a very small space. One way in is through the aesthetics of the everyday. Whose laundry is hanging from the washing lines in the communal drying areas? German, Albanian, Sinti, Italian, Nigerian, Iraqi, Syrian, Egyptian, Afghan. And in which flat is the rose-patterned bedspread lying on the bed? Someone has written on a wall: “RMD 16 – we rule here.” Nobody rules here, in Munich’s 16th district. Things seem to work perfectly well without anyone in charge. In the car park, young men in tracksuits and gold chains lean against large, expensive cars. Their haircuts and patter have something of the rapper Haftbefehl about them. No photographs, please. Karl-Heinz and Christa sit at a camping table playing Skip-Bo. Their cacti are lined up against the wall, getting some air. “We Germans have long been in the minority,” the elderly couple reckons. “At least 70 per cent have a migrant background or are foreigners.” At weekends, as many as 50 Romanian men play boules in the park. Kosovars practise kickboxing alongside Serbs. Sinti families barbecue. A Turkish-German investment adviser polishes the alloy wheels of his Audi A8 while his unemployed cousins watch enviously. Doris, from Nigeria, makes herself look nice, even though life as a single mother is hard. Nearby, Lebanese families are celebrating something. You don't have to travel far to see the world. Sometimes 26 blocks are enough. ¹ The “American Estate” in Munich-Ramersdorf was built in 1949 on behalf of the US occupying authorities to house Air Force personnel involved in the Berlin Airlift. After the Americans left in 1964, civil servants and Siemens employees moved in.
